I met and befriended G. Warlock Vance when I attended Kent State University to get my MA in English. Warlock is a fiction writer - the real deal.
When I opened up recently about my struggles to integrate blogging with my other writing pursuits, Warlock sympathized and sent me this email. It's a good reflection from a professional writer looking beyond the trends.
"I enjoyed reading through your blog entries, especially the nostalgic jaunts into your childhood, but I find the whole concept a little off-putting. I gave it a try myself (may have even sent you the link), but after two or three entries I began to think "What's the point?" I'd rather spend my time writing a story or a novel than record various random thoughts that no one will read (you at least have a fairly regular audience).
The blogs are so fragile too - subject to the server's storage capacity and/or how often the blogger pays the bills. Also, if it does get up on one of the sites that are "free" and cybernetically "immortal" then it makes me wonder - how much clutter can the medium withstand? The universe, we're told, is infinite and ever-expanding. Grimly, it has been predicted most recently that the universe will continue to expand without end until all the stars grow dim and cold and that's it - no rubber-band theory and eventual contraction into another Big Bang - just an endless stretch into darkness and oblivion.
